The Neglect Of The Teacher Motivation A Factor In Implementation Of Education Policies.
Take it or leave it, the teacher is the pivot around which any educational system revolves.
We can go to heaven and download the most beautiful education reform anointed by Jesus Christ but if it’s not teacher centered to court and promote high sense of professionalism, dedication and commitment, our high held aim of promoting quality education will fall flat.
For the teacher to perform effectively, there’s the need for proper motivation. The Ghanaian teacher today is grappling with a lot of challenges, a lot of which have rendered us dispassionate about the job from the word go.
After training college, I had a lot of zeal in me. But something quenched that fire. I was posted to a typical village with terrible road (I entered the classroom on first day in boxer shorts), bad network, salty water, retched pavilion for classroom. To top it up, there was no accommodation. I went home, waiting for a call as to when accomodations is ready before I returned. When finally they got one, I shared it with a colleague( just imagine. Two full grown adults). Then, the almighty salary delayed for seven months.
I had no iota of passion left in me. When I was transferred to town, I told my head, “I am coming from village so some of my behaviors will be that of a villager” he didn’t know what I was talking about. It took the grace of God to reenergize me. I was confirmed on a hospital bed yet they took money from me. When my confirmation letter came, I was asked to pay to collect it. I suffered salary two consecutive times through no fault of mine. Each time, I have to pay the ippd coordinator to get it resolved. They claim there’s no fund. Just latter part of last year, I have to pay to have my management unit changed. I am due for promotion since last year, but nobody cares. The list goes on.
Almost every teacher, just like me, has something to resolve with our employer. Arrears, promotion, upgrades, study leave, etc. Total systemic failure from top to bottom. Just imagine a newly employed teacher being paid half salary. New Curriculum has been introduced in a bizarre manner. From the training ground to the classroom, nothing is motivating. In the midst of all these distress, how can the teacher be motivated to put up his best?
Something must change. Motivation, just like accountability does not bother around only money. We just want to be treated well, recognized and respected.
