GNMTA Demands Eight Months Allowance Owed Trainee Nurses And Midwives. We Dont Owe Any Student A Tune Of 8 Months, The Arrears Are For 3 Months – Ministry Of Health.
The attention of the Ministry of Health (MoH) has been drawn to a publication in some traditional and social media platforms about a press release written and circulated by the Ghana Nurse-Midwife Trainees’ Association (GNMTA) alleging non-payment of eight months of Nursing and Midwifery trainee allowances.
The release further alleges that MoH has stopped the payment of nursing training allowances to students pursuing the various professional programmes in its training institutions, thereby. creating hardships for students and parents.
The Academic year of health training institutions under the Ministry of Health spans ten months ie. September to June each year. The 2019/2020 final year students who were due to complete their studies in June, 2020 together with other continuing students of that year, had parts of their academic calendar disrupted by the outbreak of the Covid-19 disease in March 2020 and the subsequent lockdown of the country, which affected all educational institutions including Health Training Institutions.
However, there was a window for the final year students of the 2019/2020 academic year to return to school around October 2020, to complete their programmes of study.
The government of Ghana through the Ministry of Health, in 2020, paid three months arrears (January, February, March, 2020) to continuing students of the 2019/2020 batch of students. Students who were admitted into the health training institutions for the 2020/2021 academic year could not start their programmes of study in September, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the closure of educational institutions.
They, however, started their courses in January, 2021 instead of September, 2020, and are due for the payment of three-month trainee allowances (January, February and March, 2021).
In the meantime, the Ministry of Health has processed the payment for January, February, and March 2021 for continuing students, which has been approved by the Ministry of Finance for the Controller and Accountant General to release the funds.
The Ministry of Health wishes to assure the public that it does not owe any student to the tune of eight months as stated in the press release from GNMTA, neither has the Ministry stopped the payment of trainee allowances to students of government health training institutions.
The payments are in arrears for three months (April, May, and June, 2020) to the 2019/2020 final year students who completed their courses in December 2020.
The arrears for the 2 cohorts of students as mentioned earlier are being processed for payment. We, therefore, call students to exercise restraint and wait for the payments to be made soon.
