The founder of Innovative Teachers, Stephen Desi in a meeting with the press sighted by Bricy Boateng on social media yesterday, disclosed that the three giant teacher unions namely GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT-GH used teachers’ tier two pension fund to pre-finance the manufacturing of Teachers Mate 1 (TM1) laptops by KA Technologies Ghana Limited for teachers.
“GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT-GH together with TEWU are members of the board. They went and took our collective money. The money in the second tier pension, the one that when you go on retirement, you are entitled to be given as a lump sum; these unions together with TEWU, and all the board members agreed that they will use our money to fund the manufacturing of uncertified laptops.” He noted.

As if that was not enough, these unions wrote to GES that the amount they took for them to fund the laptops is due for payment, GES must instruct the CAGD to deduct from the source so that they can use it to make the payment. He added.
Interestingly, some teachers were deducted an amount of GH¢ 509.00 as the 30% cost component of the laptops but 30% of GH¢ 1,550.00 is less than GH¢509. The difference is interest being paid on the loan acquired by the unions and is being borne by the teacher. Mr Desu revealed
According to the founder, GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT-GH were bent on forcing the Ministry of Education to engage KA Technologies in the production and distribution of laptops to teachers at all cost and suggested the cost-sharing percentage ratio of 30:70 between teachers and the government.

“The fact is, when the Ministry of Education accepted to use KA Technologies for the production or manufacturing of the laptops, there was no money to support the manufacturing yet GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT-GH were bent on producing this laptop at all cost as if teachers’ lives depend on this laptop.” He noted.
He continued, “In any case, which group met GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT-GH and told them that if teachers don’t get the laptop in Ghana, all of us are going to die, and so at all cost we need a laptop.”
Mr Desu believes that these teacher unions are greatly to blame for the whole controversies surrounding the manufacturing of substandard laptops, which is also not certified under the laws of Ghana.
