GES Should Go With The MoU Signed On The ”One Teacher One Laptop” Initiative For Teachers, Before Demanding For A Workshop

GES SHOULD COMPLY WITH THE MoU SIGNED ON THE “ONE TEACHER,ONE LAPTOP”INITIATIVE-TEACHERS

We, the undersigned teachers, in our capacity as members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), write to demand that the Ghana Education Service(HQ) comply with the memorandum signed by the teacher Unions on the “One Teacher, One Laptop” Initiative.

It was shocking to have read a letter from GES dated 8th February 2022 with reference number GES /HQ/SDTU/11/22 signed by Mr Anthony Boateng, Deputy Director-General(MS) calling on teachers to attend a three(3) to four(4) day online training on the use of laptops yet to supplied to the majority of teachers across the country for which the teachers would be given CPD points and certificates of participation.

Our concerns are as follows;

Based on the agreement signed by the teacher unions, such a workshop must be organised after the laptops have been supplied to all teachers across the country. So, one will ask, has that been done? The answer is a big “No”. If so, why the rush to organise a training workshop? Would teachers yet to receive their laptops attend the training or not? These are nagging questions GES and the teacher Unions have to answer as soon as possible.

Again, in the MoU, it was clearly stated that technical training would be organised for all teachers at locations agreed upon by the parties. A virtual training was not stated in the agreement.

We wish to state without a speck of equivocation that the training was paid for as part of the cost of the laptop, and as such, we will not accept any virtual training for which we would expend data bundles. In any case, the poor network conditions in many parts of this country would not favour the majority of teachers.

We are, by this statement, calling on the Director -General of GES to ensure that the content of MoU as signed by the teacher Unions concerning the “One Teacher, One Laptop” is adhered to strictly.

We need physical technical training as contained in the MoU. But before then, GES should, as a matter of urgency, take steps to supply the laptops to all teachers across the country.
