ADVICE TO TEACHERS ABOUT GNAT. THE ONLY WAY TO BRING GNATS ON ITS KNEES

*MASS EXIT: THE ONLY WAY TO BRING GNAT ON ITS KNEES*

Many teachers in Ghana as well as section of the public know GNAT as the only teacher union in Ghana. It is just recently that NAGRAT had come to be on the lips of many graduate teachers. It is however, not clear, how many teachers understand the full operations of GNAT. All that we know is that it has a constitution which gives the organization the power to manage the affairs of teachers. Apart from loan acquisition and yearly provision of end of year packages such dairies, pen drives, small speaker radio, calenders, old fashioned bags etc, we don’t know anything else that the organization do for teachers. We heard long ago that because of their numbers, they hold bargaining power to negotiate better conditions on behalf of teachers. We have also heard how the constitution provides the GNAT executives the power to provide some welfare for its members.

A closer look at the operation of GNAT indicates that the organization can only serve only one fourth of its members (200,000). Shockingly, most of the welfare activities promoted by GNAT reach only few people and leave the masses: a clear indication that GNAT cannot serve the interest of its members.

Many GNAT members complain every day and it seems they do not have any choice than to stay with THE MOTHER UNION as though they are conjoined at all cost. Many teachers also put faith in the so called *GNAT pension package* which is very woeful and under the *disgust of Teacher Fund*, deceive teachers of take home package to salvage their pension desperations.

Though many teachers are dissatisfied, they also fear joining another teacher union will produce the same result, a precedence that had attracted bad image for young and emerging unions. They say NAGRAT and CCT are the same; they do the same thing, speak the same language and laugh at teachers to scorn. Some say they are feasting heavily on teachers’ contribution made to them.

It is quite unfortunate that, over *200,000 teachers* destiny can be hijacked by a so called mother union under the *pretense of constitutional regulations* and some group of intellectual dweebs wielding the bargaining power are cunningly shortchanging teachers and pretending working for them.

Now, the question is *WHY ARE TEACHERS STILL FOLLOWING GNAT AND WILL NOT QUIT?* The Ghana labour Act 2003 allows for the formation of unions or freedom of association. But the impression had been created especially by GES that GNAT is the only credible union. For the same reason IPPD coordinators of various districts and regions put teachers automatically on GNAT after recruitment by GES with reasons best known to them. Every year, out of 20,000 recruitments done by GES, IPPD coordinators succeed in giving close to 16,000 of them to GNAT leaving other unions struggling. GNAT go about telling teachers that ATAG and other teacher unions only want to chop money whilst they cruse in V8 and 4×4 cars. It doesn’t make sense. It is unfortunate teachers have choice but are failing to exercise that power of choice.

The hidden truth is that *over 280,000 teachers* do not need only *ONE TEACHERS UNION* to masquerade as mother and wallow in wealth at the expense of desperate teachers in the face of growing hardship in the teachers front. We need close to *TEN TEACHER UNIONS or MORE (equivalent to 28000 members each)* for better competition in *WELFARE PROMOTION*. Out of these lots, they can now have one *UNION UMBRELLA* to coordinate them for *BARGAINING POWER* things.

Now, the only cure to dismantle GNAT and bring it to its KNEES is to EXIT in MASSES to other UNIONS to create more room for competition. If 100,000 or more teachers could leave GNAT and join OTHER UNIONS, they won’t be ruling us again. *They will no longer possess that BARGAINING POWER and sit aloof for teachers to suffer at the hands of their employer – GES and MOE.*

Tell a GNAT member to tell another that *MASS EXIT* of the union must start this year to launch the most spectacular happening in the history of Ghana. When we leave GNAT they will sit up and learn a bigger lesson.

*How does GNAT Height, Hostels, Farms, Mall etc concern the ordinary teacher?* Teachers need better condition of service, *GOOD and BETTER PAY (GH₵2500 take home for PS)*, allowances and better accommodation *not infrastructure that the owners are in the infinity*. SNNIT pension: Tier 1 and 2 is catering for our pension, we don’t need any additional pension things, we want to enjoy the profession whilst in active service not when we had gone on pension.

*ARISE TEACHERS AND LET’S BREAK THE JINX THAT HAD LONG HAUNTED TEACHERS IN THE HISTORY OF THE PROFESSION. OUR CURSE IS GNAT AND IF WE DON’T DO ANYTHING TODAY OUR FUTURE WILL NEVER BE BETTER.*
